Tarasp Castle in Engadin

There is hardly another castle estate that dominates the surrounding countryside as elegantly as the imposing Tarasp Castle. The castle is built on top of a hundred metre high cliff and watches over the River Weiler flowing at the foot of the hill. The white castle walls are reflected in the waters of Tarasp Lake.
The estate dates back to the 11th century, and was home to the lordships of Tarasp. From 1464, Tarasp belonged to Austria. The Imperial Eagle is still resplendent on the walls of the castle and a sign proclaims: "Hie Estereih" [Here Austria]. During the 16th century, the estate was enlarged to the size it is today and turned into a border fortress.
