Kufstein Fortress

Kufstein fortress is a jewel in the Tyrolean countryside and the city of Kufstein’s emblem. It was mentioned in official documents for the first time in 1205, when it was owned by the bishops of Regensburg. Ownership was subsequently shared with the dukes of Bavaria. From 1313 the fortress was fief to the bishops of Bavaria. In 1415, Duke Ludwig-the-Bearded reinforced the fortress. In 1504, Emperor Maximilian I conquered Kufstein and had the castle rebuilt and the fortress enlarged. The estate was expanded again in the 17th century. In 1703 and in 1805 the Bavarians took over the fortress, but it went back to Austrian ownership in 1814. Since 1924, it has belonged to the city of Kufstein. In 1996, the complete estate was leased to Top-City-Kufstein GmbH.
