Inn Cycle Route

Discover Tyrol and Bavaria in 8 days / 7 nights from 539,- €
Burghausen along Inn Cycle Route

The Inn River flows through Tyrol, crossing over into Bavaria near Kufstein and between Braunau and Passau it becomes the border river between Germany and Austria. Framed by the majestic Karwendel- and Kaisergebirge Mountains, the Inn Cycle Route runs along flat routes towards the foothills of the Alps, becoming wider and more pastoral, like the surrounding landscape, before reaching the Danube in Passau. Highlights along the route include the Olympic city of Innsbruck and the border town of Kufstein. A trip to the episcopal city of Passau is also recommended. Along this tour there are some short, steep ascents. Therefore, a certain level of basic fitness is an advantage for cyclists.

Day 1 Arrival to Innsbruck

Innsbruck

Individual arrival to the Tyrolean state capital. Framed by more than 2000 metre high mountains, the historical town centre offers picturesque 17th century town houses in densely built, tight alleys. There is a lot to see here: the Hofburg (Imperial Palace) with the Hofkirche (Imperial Church), the Castle Ambras, the Baroque Cathedral, the Golden Roof (Goldene Dachel) and the Innsbruck Cyclorama. Rented bikes will be available at the hotel.

Day 2 Innsbruck - Strass, approx. 45 km

Hall in Tyrol

First stop along the Inn Cycle Path is the former Imperial town of Hall, which became rich through the mining of salt and has given its name to a number of other salt mining towns. You will then continue on along Lower Inn Valley: an old, cultivated landscape which was home to the Raeti. In Wattens a visit to the Swarovski-Crystal Worlds is recommended, which André Heller has created a show for, and in Schwaz you will be able to visit a mine to see how silver is mined. Over 20,000 people worked in the mines.
Overnight stay in Strass

Day 3 Strass - Kufstein, approx. 40 km

Zillertal

On today’s short route we recommend you take a detour into the Ziller Valley, which begins near Strass and has a narrow gauge railway running through it. You will then continue on past Brixlegg with its strange Museum Graveyard and on to Rattenberg, the gateway to Tyrol, which once belonged to Bavaria and which has a beautiful Old Town. Gradually the Inn begins to lose its mountain river character as you approach your destination for the day.
Overnight stay in Kufstein

Day 4 Kufstein - Wasserburg, approx. 65 km

Kufstein

Shortly after setting out this morning you will reach Bavarian ground in Kiefersfelden and the foothills of the Alps. Neubeuern Castle is worth a visit from which you will have a lovely panoramic view. Soon you will come to the ancient trading post of Rosenheim, which is also known due to films and TV shows which have been filmed there. Cycling on at a steady pace you will reach Wasserburg, located on a bend of the river and  is known as the most beautiful city on the Inn River.
Overnight stay in Wasserburg

Day 5 Wasserburg - Mühldorf, approx. 50 km

Inn Cycle Route

Today’s route leads you through Kraiburg and Ebing with their beautiful townscapes. Waldkraiburg is a very young town: it was founded in 1950 from an armament complex of the armed forces and was the first refugee town in Germany. For centuries Mühldorf was a pawn between the Bavarian leaders and the Bishops of Salzburg and has a beautifully preserved Old Town in the Inn-Salzach-Style.
Overnight stay in Mühldorf

Day 6 Mühldorf - Braunau/Prienbach, approx. 55 km

Hagenau Castle near Braunau

Shortly after setting out this morning you will take a detour to the famous pilgrim destination of Altötting which is located a little away from the Inn and attracts 1 million visitors a year. You will then continue on, passing the Perach power station. We recommend taking an alternative route through Burghausen on the Salzach River: you will come to the Inn once more near Haiming. You will then continue on a little further before reaching your destination for the day.
Overnight stay in Braunau/Prienbach

Day 7 Braunau/Prienbach - Schärding, approx. 50 km

Schärding

Today you will cycle mostly along excellent quality paths along the expanding river, passing through the Preservation Area of the Lower Inn, which is an important bird preservation area. In Obernberg you will be able to visit one of the most beautiful Baroque squares in Austria and in Reichersberg you can visit the impressive monastery. Passing by the Augustinian monastery in Suben, which is now a prison, you will come to the Baroque town of  Schärding, which is also well known for its good beer.
